Cave du Marmandais
History
Cave du Marmandais is a cooperative winery representing the Côtes du Marmandais AOC, located near Marmande in the Lot-et-Garonne region of southwestern France. Its current structure was established in 2003 through the merger of two historic cooperative wineries: Cave de Beaupuy, founded in 1957 on the right bank of the Garonne River, and Cave de Cocumont, founded in 1956 on the left bank. United under the name Cave du Marmandais, the merger enabled local winegrowers to create a stronger and more integrated production and distribution system.
Viticulture in this region dates back to the Gallo-Roman era, and during the Middle Ages the area served as an important supporting wine-producing region for nearby Bordeaux. In 1990, the region was officially recognized as the AOC Côtes du Marmandais, establishing a formal quality framework for local wines.
Today, Cave du Marmandais manages approximately 900 hectares of vineyards with more than 100 growers and produces around 6 million bottles annually. As the producer responsible for the vast majority of the appellation’s production, it has become both the leading representative of the AOC and the central pillar of the regional wine industry.
Philosophy & Vision
The identity of Cave du Marmandais is clearly rooted in its role as both a “regional flagship cooperative winery” and a producer that embodies the culture and lifestyle of southwestern France. The winery defines itself as a representative of the region’s identity, placing great importance on expressing the warmth of the local climate, culinary traditions, festive spirit, and sense of community through its wines.
The vineyards extend across both sides of the Garonne River, where clay-limestone and gravelly soils combine with a mild climate and cooling river breezes to create wines characterized by generous fruit expression and balanced structure — hallmarks of the southwestern French style.
One of the defining strengths of the cooperative model is its ability to provide technical expertise and commercial support to individual small growers while still preserving the distinct personality of each vineyard parcel. The winery works with classic southwestern and Bordeaux grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec, while also actively preserving and promoting the region’s indigenous grape variety, Abouriou, which serves as an important point of distinction.
In recent years, respect for the environment and sustainable viticulture has become another core value of the winery. Cave du Marmandais positions itself as a “modern cooperative winery” dedicated to protecting both nature and the local community. Beyond wine production, the cooperative has expanded into tourism, educational experiences, and cultural activities, further strengthening its close connection with the region and its people.
Certifications & Recognition
The credibility of Cave du Marmandais is fundamentally rooted in its role as the principal producer within the Côtes du Marmandais AOC. Since the appellation received official recognition in 1990, it has established the quality standards for the region, and Cave du Marmandais has become the winery most closely identified with the appellation due to its dominant share of production.
In addition, many of the cooperative’s cuvées and brands have consistently received recognition at both French and international wine competitions, reinforcing the winery’s reputation for quality. Its wines have repeatedly earned gold, silver, and bronze medals at prestigious competitions including the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, the Concours Général Agricole, regional Southwest France wine competitions, and the Decanter World Wine Awards.
The winery is also regularly featured and rated in respected wine guides such as Guide Hachette des Vins. Together, these recognitions demonstrate that Cave du Marmandais is far more than a large-scale cooperative producer; it is increasingly recognized as a modern, terroir-driven winery committed to preserving indigenous grape varieties, expressing regional identity, and maintaining a strong focus on quality.
