Champagne Cossy

History

The history of Champagne Cossy dates back to 1764, when the Cossy family first began cultivating vineyards in Champagne. At the time, Sophie Cossy’s grandfather focused not on producing Champagne, but on growing grapes to provide the best possible life for his family. During the difficult years of the early 20th century, marked by the phylloxera crisis and economic instability, the family decided to become Champagne producers, laying the foundation for what would become Champagne Cossy.

Today, the estate is led by owner and winemaker Sophie Cossy. Her father, Francis Cossy, originally worked in another field before returning to the terroir and vineyards he loved. Supported by his wife Genevieve, he continued the family tradition of Champagne production. After Francis passed away, Sophie inherited the vineyards at the age of 25 and managed the estate alongside her mother. Following Genevieve’s retirement in 2017, Sophie has independently led the house, shaping a modern and distinctive identity for Champagne Cossy.

Since 2017, Sophie has introduced a renewed brand identity and significant changes in winemaking. The new logo combines the faces of Francis and Sophie, symbolizing the union of masculinity and femininity, past and future, nature and culture, tradition and modernity. In the cellar, dosage levels were reduced — Brut Champagne, for example, was lowered from around 14g to 7g — resulting in a more refined and contemporary style. The house also expanded its range with several new Extra Brut cuvées.

Philosophy & Vision

Champagne Cossy is recognized for successfully combining traditional craftsmanship, modern know-how, and Sophie Cossy’s refined sensibility to create Champagnes with unique balance and depth. In a region where strict traditions and regulations remain deeply rooted, the house has devoted considerable time and effort to developing its own identity while embracing modern potential.

Respect for terroir and environmental sustainability lies at the heart of the estate’s philosophy. The vineyards cover approximately 7 hectares across 34 plots stretching from Jouy-les-Reims to Arcis-le-Ponsart, passing through villages such as Pargny-les-Reims, Ville-Dommange, Courmas, Bouilly, and Serzy-et-Prin. The vineyard composition consists of 53% Pinot Meunier, 32% Pinot Noir, and 15% Chardonnay.

Sophie believes that healthy vines are the foundation of great wine. To preserve biodiversity and the natural balance of the ecosystem, hedges have been planted around the vineyards, and natural grass growth between the vines is maintained to encourage microbial life and healthy soil activity. The soils are carefully managed so they can breathe, regenerate naturally, and nourish the vines in the best possible way. The estate is also committed to sustainable viticulture and is actively working toward organic certification.

Certifications & Recognition

Champagne Cossy places strong emphasis on environmentally responsible viticulture and sustainable vineyard management, continuously working toward obtaining organic certification while integrating eco-friendly practices throughout production.

In 2016, Sophie Cossy was awarded “Vigneron de l’Année” (Winemaker of the Year) at Les Trophées Champenois, one of Champagne’s prestigious annual industry awards judged by journalists and expert panels. In a region traditionally dominated by men, Sophie earned recognition for successfully taking over the estate at a young age and leading it through a period of innovation and transformation.

Today, Champagne Cossy produces a diverse portfolio including the Premier Cru-rated Cossy Éclat Brut, Extra Brut, Rosé, Blanc de Blancs, Vieilles Vignes, and Millésime cuvées, reflecting a wide range of styles and consumer preferences. Among them, the 2006 vintage “Cuvée Patrem” — meaning “father” — holds special significance, as it was originally created by Francis and later completed and released by Sophie in 2021, symbolizing both the family legacy and the spirit of the house.
