Domaine du Père Caboche

“I always taste wine to detect changes in taste, and decide everything based on that taste. Instead of sticking to a special recipe, we create a special character every year by choosing a method that suits the characteristics of that vintage.”

Domaine du Père Caboche in the Rhône region began in 1777 when Jean-Louis Boisson married Elisabeth Chambellan, planting vines on the Châteauneuf du Pape vineyard that Elisabeth brought as her dowry. After that, vines were steadily cultivated, and in 1944, 300 bottles of wine were bottled. It was in 1950 that wine began to be produced under the name “Père Caboche” in earnest. From 1777 to the present, the Boisson family has steadily owned the vineyard without selling or exchanging the vineyard, making wine mostly from vines with an average age, the oldest vine being planted in 1906.

Père Caboche?

Although many producers use family names as domain names, the Boisson family's reason for choosing the name Père Caboche is simple and attractive. At a time when wine sales were not easy for many producers in the southern region, they made a living by working other jobs besides wine production, but the Boisson family made a living as a blacksmith. The nickname given to this job is “Caboche,” which is a word in the local dialect that means a large stud on a shoe rack, and is the part used to fasten shoes under the horse’s feet. “Père” is a French word meaning ancestor or ancestor, and was chosen as a name to tell the story of how the Boisson family began producing their first wine by using it along with the family's nickname, Caboche. The labels for Père Caboche's Vaucluse red, white and rosé wines were designed with ideas taken from the marriage certificate of Jean Louis Boisson and Elisabeth's marriage in 1777 and the document used as their son's baptismal certificate in 1787. The name of this wine, “Le Petit Caboche,” was written using a classic-looking material and the font used in the document, and an image of Old Vine, the symbol of this domain, was added.
