Champagne Duntze

History

The history of the Duntze family began in 1856 with Friedrich Duntze, who was born into a family of brewers in Bremen, Germany. Fascinated by the potential success of Champagne, he was among the many Germans who settled in the Champagne region during the 19th century in search of new opportunities. His exceptional passion and devotion to Champagne were later passed on to his son, Georges Frederic. Born in Reims, in the heart of Champagne, Georges Frederic Duntze managed several Champagne houses before deciding, in 1913, to produce authentic cuvées under his own name for his most important clients. This decision laid the foundation for what would become Champagne Duntze. Due to a series of circumstances, the Champagne house was temporarily closed. During this period, his son Robert and grandson Vincent became renowned wine brokers and played an important role in establishing the foundation that would eventually allow the house to resume wine production. Victor Duntze, an oenologist and wine broker, later established the Champagne house under the name Champagne Duntze. Drawing upon the experience of his father, who had previously worked as a broker, as well as his own expertise, knowledge, and extensive network of growers, he developed the foundations for producing exceptional cuvées. In addition, through his experience managing vineyards at the request of his mother’s family — descendants of the Champagne Montaudon house — he further strengthened his ability to craft top-quality Champagnes.

Philosophy & Vision

“Great wine comes first and foremost from great terroir.”

Victor Duntze believes that wine begins with the soil, where all essential foundations are rooted. He explains that the vine and human craftsmanship then work together, ultimately creating a Champagne capable of conveying deep emotions to those who taste it. According to him, all of these elements are interconnected like links in a chain, and that chain demands both honesty and rigor. He selects grapes according to strict standards, believing that the interaction and balance of countless soil components, together with the diversity of flora, fauna, and microorganisms, contribute to the richness and complexity of the vines. To preserve both nature and the vineyards, he limits intrusive practices that may damage the soil and instead adopts methods such as covering the soil surface with natural materials to retain moisture, improve vitality, and strengthen resistance against disease. These choices ultimately reinforce the strength of the vine roots. Through these sustainable viticultural practices, Champagne Duntze not only helps protect the environment, but also cultivates healthier vines, resulting in improvements in both the quality and quantity of the wines produced.

Certifications & Recognition

Champagne Duntze is a Champagne house that has earned recognition among professional distribution channels and Champagne enthusiasts through its terroir-focused philosophy and consistently high quality, rather than by heavily promoting awards from major international wine competitions. Several cuvées have received scores around 90 points from the prestigious French gastronomy and wine guide Gault & Millau, demonstrating the house’s strong quality credentials. Its Extra Brut Premier Cru and 100% Meunier-based Champagnes have also been introduced with highly favorable ratings. In addition, various cuvées have consistently received reviews on major global wine review platforms such as Vivino, earning praise for their balance, finesse, and expression of terroir. Rather than focusing on flashy award histories, Champagne Duntze continues to prove its value through long-term trust and recognition built upon traditional Champagne production methods and an honest winemaking philosophy.
