Hammeken Cellars

History

Hammeken Cellars is a modern Spanish wine producer and export house founded in 1996 by Danish entrepreneur Nicholas Hammeken. After working in the wine trade across several European countries, including Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, Nicholas moved to Spain with the vision of modernizing the image of Spanish wine for international consumers. At the time, many Spanish wines were considered overly rustic and heavily oaked despite their outstanding quality potential, and Hammeken saw an opportunity to create wines that would preserve Spanish identity while offering a fresher and more approachable style.

Originally established as a non-branded wine trading company under the name Vinnico Export, the business launched its first proprietary wine collection, “Montgó,” in 2001. This marked the beginning of Hammeken Cellars’ transformation into one of Spain’s most innovative modern wine companies. Over time, the winery expanded rapidly, developing numerous successful brands such as Piquitos, Allegranza, Creencia, Gotas de Mar, Pasas, and Radio Boka, while sourcing wines from many of Spain’s leading appellations including Priorat, Ribera del Duero, Jumilla, Rioja, Rías Baixas, and Almansa.

Today, Hammeken Cellars exports more than 1.5 million cases annually to over 40 countries worldwide and has become one of the most internationally recognized modern Spanish wine producers. Despite its global growth, the company remains strongly focused on expressing Spain’s indigenous grape varieties and regional diversity through wines that combine traditional Spanish roots with contemporary winemaking philosophy.

Philosophy & Vision

Hammeken Cellars is built around the philosophy of creating “modern Spanish wines” — wines that respect the heritage and local identity of Spain while being crafted to match contemporary consumer preferences. Rather than producing wines solely according to traditional regional expectations, the winery places strong emphasis on freshness, drinkability, fruit purity, elegant textures, and approachable styles.

A defining characteristic of Hammeken Cellars is its strong consumer-focused approach. Nicholas Hammeken believed that understanding the preferences of wine drinkers was just as important as understanding vineyards and terroirs. Extensive market research, trend analysis, packaging design, and direct consumer feedback all play an important role in shaping each wine concept. The company develops wines with clear identities and distinctive branding, aiming to offer “affordable luxury” wines that overdeliver in both quality and presentation.

The winery works closely with growers and winemakers across Spain, sourcing fruit from multiple regions and carefully selecting vineyard parcels best suited to each project. Indigenous Spanish grape varieties such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, Monastrell, Bobal, Cariñena, Verdejo, Albariño, and Godello remain central to the portfolio. Winemaking combines New World precision and freshness with Spanish terroir expression, resulting in wines that are fruit-forward, modern, and easy to understand while still maintaining regional authenticity.

Certifications & Recognition

Hammeken Cellars has gained international recognition as one of the leading innovators of modern Spanish wine, helping reshape global perceptions of Spain’s wine industry. The winery’s broad portfolio spans more than 18 appellations and over 20 brands, many of which have achieved strong commercial success and international awards.

Sustainability and environmental responsibility have become increasingly important pillars of the company. In recent years, Hammeken Cellars has significantly expanded its production of organic and sustainably farmed wines, with many projects focused on biodiversity, reduced environmental impact, and minimal-intervention winemaking. The company also collaborates with environmental initiatives such as tree-planting and carbon-offset programs while continuing to reduce the use of difficult-to-recycle materials.

Today, Hammeken Cellars is regarded as one of Spain’s most trend-driven and internationally oriented wine companies, recognized for combining innovative branding, consumer insight, sustainable practices, and modern winemaking techniques with the authenticity of Spanish grape varieties and terroirs. Its wines are now distributed globally and are widely appreciated for offering freshness, accessibility, and strong value while maintaining a clear sense of Spanish identity.
