Chateau La Negly
History
Château La Négly is located in the La Clape massif of Languedoc overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, where exceptional natural conditions create a unique environment for viticulture. Influenced by the Tramontane wind from the northwest and cooling sea sprays drifting inland, the vineyards benefit from abundant sunshine and slow grape ripening, allowing the vines to fully absorb the advantages of this remarkable terroir.
The estate’s history dates back to the 18th century, when wines were first produced under the name “Ancely.” The property later became known as “Nerly” in 1781 before officially adopting the name Château La Négly in 1807. Over generations, several notable winemakers contributed to the development of the estate, ultimately shaping Château La Négly into one of the leading premium wine producers of Languedoc.
Today, the estate is owned and managed by the Roux-Rosset family, who have focused on elevating quality above all else. Major transformations were introduced, including replacing older grape varieties such as Aramon, Terret, and Carignan Blanc with Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, as well as abandoning machine harvesting in favor of small-box manual harvesting to preserve grape quality. In 2006, together with partner Alain Wittner, the family expanded the estate by acquiring the 25-hectare Domaine de Boède, further increasing the diversity and complexity of their wines.
Philosophy & Vision
Château La Négly is deeply committed to expressing the full potential of the Languedoc terroir through meticulous vineyard management and uncompromising quality standards. The philosophy of the estate is built upon respecting the unique characteristics of each parcel while continuously refining both viticultural and winemaking practices.
The terroir of Château La Négly combines fertile alluvial soils with clay-limestone formations that contribute body and structure to the wines, while the soils of Domaine de Boède — composed of sandy and sandstone elements — bring additional roundness and elegance. Situated on coastal hillsides close to the Mediterranean, the vineyards benefit from strong day-to-night temperature variations and constant sea breezes, ensuring perfect grape ripening while maintaining freshness and aromatic precision. The powerful, dry Tramontane winds also naturally protect the vineyards from disease, reducing the need for intervention and preserving the purity of the fruit.
The estate practices organic farming methods and places strong emphasis on cleanliness, sustainability, and strict quality control. Through these efforts, Château La Négly has become a benchmark producer for many wineries seeking to reveal the true potential of Languedoc wines.
Certifications & Recognition
Today, Château La Négly is widely recognized as one of the most prestigious premium wine producers in Languedoc, earning acclaim from both critics and wine enthusiasts worldwide. The estate gained particular international attention through outstanding ratings from renowned wine critics, including Robert Parker.
One of the estate’s flagship wines, “Clos des Truffiers” 2001 — produced from old vines — received a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker, proving the world-class potential of Languedoc wines at a time when the region was still relatively unfamiliar to many wine lovers. Since then, Château La Négly’s top cuvées have consistently achieved exceptional scores and are now regarded alongside some of the finest wines of Bordeaux Grand Cru level.
In addition to its prestigious flagship wines, the estate’s more approachable ranges have also received strong critical praise, further solidifying Château La Négly’s position as one of the essential and most respected producers in the Languedoc region.
