Chateau Haut-Grelot

History

: In 1920, the Bonneau family established a small farm in a windy village near the Gironde estuary, cultivating vines while raising livestock alongside them. They instinctively sensed the unique potential of the riverside soils, though it would take generations to fully reveal the land’s true character.

In the late 1930s, the discovery of a natural spring deep beneath the property marked the estate’s first major turning point. The vineyard was reorganized into a single unified estate, and the presence of water revitalized both the soil and the vines. The vineyard grew healthier, and the land regained its vitality.

During the 1970s, Joel Bonneau became convinced that this was not merely land for growing grapes, but a place capable of producing true Bordeaux wines. By combining traditional viticulture with his own intuition and technical expertise, he transformed the estate into what became known as “a small but powerful château.”

Today, the winery continues under the care of the fourth generation of the family. Rather than seeking the grandeur of large Bordeaux châteaux, Château Haut Grelot has built its identity through consistency, sincerity, and the quiet strength that only a family-run estate can preserve over time.

About Wine

: Produced from 3 hectares of gravelly and sandy soils located on the upper plots of Agrières, this wine is made from mechanically harvested grapes with selective sorting. It is aged for 12 months in new, one-wine, and two-wine French oak barrels, and is selected from the finest batches of the Première Cuvée.

Tasting Note

  • Merlot 70%, Cabernet Sauvignon 30%
  • Rich and deep ruby red in color, the wine expresses fresh and vibrant aromas of vanilla and red berries with remarkable intensity. On the palate, concentrated flavors of raspberry and cherry are beautifully intertwined with toasted and vanilla notes derived from oak aging, creating a wine that is both fresh and elegantly complex.
