Maiolica

History

: Founded in 1960 in the village of Tollo, in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo, Italy, Cantina Tollo has grown into one of the region's leading wineries, preserving its rich viticultural heritage while continuously pursuing excellence in winemaking. Having played a significant role in the development of local agriculture and the improvement of wine quality, Cantina Tollo is also deeply committed to rediscovering and reviving forgotten indigenous grape varieties.

Maiolica is a rare indigenous red grape variety of Abruzzo that was once widely cultivated in the region but gradually disappeared over time. In an effort to preserve this important part of its viticultural heritage, Cantina Tollo began experimental cultivation of Maiolica in 2019, successfully reintroducing the variety to the wine market with the 2021 vintage. This meaningful project represents not only the revival of an ancient grape variety but also the preservation of Abruzzo's historical and cultural identity.

By harmoniously combining traditional viticultural practices with modern winemaking techniques, Cantina Tollo continues to showcase the remarkable potential of Abruzzo's diverse terroirs and indigenous grape varieties. Maiolica stands as a distinctive expression of the winery's philosophy and its profound respect for the region's cultural heritage.

About Wine

: Maiolica Terre di Chieti IGP is produced exclusively from 100% Maiolica, an indigenous red grape variety native to the Abruzzo region of Italy. The grapes are cultivated in vineyards located in the province of Chieti and are typically harvested during the second half of September.

Following the harvest, the grapes undergo spontaneous alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, using a combination of partially crushed grapes and whole bunches. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in stainless steel tanks and terracotta amphorae, allowing the natural character and distinctive expression of the grape variety to develop. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration to preserve its authentic flavors and unique personality.

The name "Maiolica" is also associated with the traditional Italian art of decorative majolica ceramics. The wine's distinctive label features a female figure inspired by 17th-century ceramic decorations found in the Church of San Donato in Castelli, Teramo. This artistic representation beautifully connects Abruzzo's traditional craftsmanship with its winemaking heritage, symbolizing the revival of a nearly forgotten indigenous grape variety.
