History
: Abrigo Garnacha Tintorera is a wine brand created by Hammeken Cellars, a Spanish wine company specializing in international exports, to showcase the distinctive character of Spain’s indigenous grape varieties and the historical heritage of their regions. The name “Abrigo” means “shelter” or “refuge” in Spanish, inspired by the Bronze Age rock shelters and ancient cave sites found throughout the Almansa region. The wine embodies a philosophy of expressing the region’s rich history and natural heritage through a modern winemaking approach.
The wine is produced from Garnacha Tintorera grapes cultivated in high-altitude vineyards approximately 700–900 meters above sea level in D.O. Almansa. The region experiences a continental-Mediterranean climate characterized by long, hot summers and cold winters. Its poor limestone soils and significant day-to-night temperature variations allow the grapes to develop remarkable concentration while maintaining balanced acidity. Garnacha Tintorera, the region’s signature grape variety, is a rare red-fleshed grape (teinturier variety), renowned for producing wines with deep color, rich structure, and excellent aging potential.
Abrigo Garnacha Tintorera represents a modern interpretation of Almansa’s traditional winemaking character. Since its introduction, the wine has gained international recognition for its outstanding quality, receiving prestigious awards including the Gilbert & Gaillard Double Gold Medal.
About Wine
: The name “Abrigo,” meaning “shelter,” “protection,” or “refuge” in Spanish, was inspired by prehistoric cave paintings discovered in rock shelters throughout the Almansa region. The grapes are sourced from vines over 30 years old, cultivated on high-altitude plateaus approximately 800–900 meters above sea level, where a continental climate provides ideal growing conditions. Following harvest, the grapes undergo a combination of traditional fermentation and carbonic maceration, followed by six months of aging in French oak barrels. This winemaking approach enhances the wine’s rich fruit character and smooth, refined texture.
