Tre Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOP Superiore

History

: Founded in 1960 in the village of Tollo in Chieti, Abruzzo, Cantina Tollo was established at a time when many Italians were leaving the rural countryside of Abruzzo in search of greater opportunities elsewhere. In contrast, the founders chose to remain in the region, believing in the potential of its fertile soils and dedicating themselves to revitalizing the vineyards of Tollo.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, life in Abruzzo was challenging, yet Cantina Tollo played an active role in supporting the local economy while investing significant effort into cultivating healthy vines and improving overall wine quality. Thanks to the winery’s dedication, the Chieti area experienced remarkable growth in both production and quality, even as neighboring regions such as Teramo and L’Aquila saw declining output. Cantina Tollo became instrumental in establishing Tollo as a true “City of Wine” within Abruzzo.

Known for producing approachable, high-quality wines at competitive prices, Cantina Tollo has earned recognition as one of Abruzzo’s leading wineries. Today, guided by the values of passion, dedication, and shared vision, the winery not only maintains a strong presence within Italy but also exports approximately 35% of its production to international markets including Europe, North America, India, and China, continuing to showcase the excellence of Abruzzo wines worldwide.

Vineyard & Winemaking

Cantina Tollo’s vineyards extend across more than 3,000 hectares, from the coastal hills influenced by the Mediterranean climate to the slopes surrounding the Maiella mountains. Gentle rolling hills, cooling sea breezes, and significant day-to-night temperature variations create ideal conditions for producing highly aromatic and expressive wines.

The winery focuses primarily on traditional Abruzzo grape varieties such as Montepulciano and Trebbiano, while continuously experimenting both in the vineyards and the cellar. Many vineyards are cultivated using the traditional pergola training system, preserving regional viticultural heritage. The historic winery facilities include vitrified cement tanks as well as large Slavonian oak casks and barrels, providing optimal conditions for wine aging.

In recent years, Cantina Tollo has also expanded its portfolio with internationally recognized varieties such as Merlot and Chardonnay, offering wines that successfully balance traditional Abruzzo character with a more modern and approachable style.
