Maison S.Delafont

History

Maison S. Delafont is a boutique négociant-éleveur and wine producer based in the Languedoc region of southern France, founded in 2010 by Samuel Delafont. Before establishing the winery, Samuel created the export and consulting company Vinipartner in 2000, working closely with winegrowers and estates throughout Southern France. Through years of collaboration with producers, he developed deep knowledge of the Languedoc terroirs and gained a strong understanding of both winemaking and international wine markets.

Unlike many traditional winemakers, Samuel Delafont did not come from a winemaking family. His outsider perspective led him to approach wine with a creative and innovative mindset, focusing on highlighting the potential of Languedoc’s often underappreciated terroirs. In 2010, he officially launched Maison S. Delafont with the ambition of creating handcrafted micro-cuvées that express the identity and diversity of the region.

Since its foundation, the house has continued to expand its activities while maintaining an artisanal philosophy. In 2015, Maison S. Delafont established its winery, offices, and tasting space in Vézénobres at the foothills of the Cévennes, and in 2017 acquired its first estate vineyards in the IGP Cévennes appellation. Today, the winery produces a wide range of wines including Limoux, Pic Saint-Loup, La Clape, Minervois, and several Languedoc blends, all designed to reflect the richness and individuality of southern French terroirs

Philosophy & Vision

Maison S. Delafont is built upon the philosophy of elevating the reputation of Languedoc wines through innovation, terroir expression, and environmental respect. Samuel Delafont believes that Languedoc possesses some of France’s most exceptional yet underrecognized terroirs, and his mission has been to reveal their full potential through meticulous blending and careful élevage.

The winery works exclusively with carefully selected grapes sourced from biodynamic, organic, or sustainably farmed vineyards, including its own parcels. Samuel travels throughout the Languedoc region each year in search of the finest vineyard lots, selecting freshly fermented wines from top growers and blending them with a precise vision for each cuvée. Small-batch production and artisanal craftsmanship are central to the house style.

Innovation also plays a defining role in the winery’s identity. Seeking to combine the advantages of stainless steel and oak aging, Samuel Delafont designed his own stainless steel barrels, known as S. Delafont Barrels. These uniquely shaped barrels preserve freshness, fruit purity, and finesse while allowing subtle oxygen exchange and lees interaction. White and red wines are often aged on lees, with part of the élevage taking place in stainless steel barrels and another portion in French oak, creating wines that balance richness, texture, freshness, and elegance.

Certifications & Recognition

Maison S. Delafont is widely recognized for its innovative and environmentally conscious approach to Languedoc winemaking. The winery follows principles inspired by permaculture and biodiversity preservation, minimizing soil intervention and encouraging living ecosystems within the vineyards. Since 2018, certain parcels have been cultivated without soil tilling or chemical inputs, reflecting the estate’s long-term commitment to sustainable viticulture.

The house has also gained attention for its distinctive approach to élevage and blending, producing handcrafted micro-cuvées that combine modern precision with authentic terroir expression. Wines from appellations such as Limoux, Pic Saint-Loup, and La Clape have received strong praise for their balance of freshness, texture, and complexity, helping reinforce the growing international reputation of premium Languedoc wines.

Today, Maison S. Delafont is regarded as one of the modern artisan négociants contributing to the evolution of Languedoc wine, combining creativity, sustainable farming, and innovative cellar techniques to produce wines that are both contemporary and deeply rooted in their terroir identity.
