Cantina Tollo

History

Cantina Tollo is one of the most historic and influential wineries in the Abruzzo region of Italy, founded in 1960 in the village of Tollo in the province of Chieti. At a time when many people were leaving rural Abruzzo in search of better opportunities elsewhere, the founders of Cantina Tollo chose to remain and invest in the region’s viticultural potential, believing in the richness of its terroir and the future of Abruzzo wine.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the winery played an important role in revitalizing the local wine industry and supporting the regional economy. While nearby areas such as Teramo and L’Aquila experienced declining production, Cantina Tollo contributed significantly to the growth and improvement of wine quality in Chieti, helping establish Tollo as a true “City of Wine” within Abruzzo. Over time, the winery earned recognition for producing approachable yet high-quality wines that reflected both regional tradition and modern winemaking standards.Today, Cantina Tollo is recognized as one of Abruzzo’s leading wineries, exporting its wines worldwide while continuing to preserve the culture and identity of the region. Guided by the values of passion, dedication, and shared knowledge, the winery has become an international ambassador for Abruzzo wines, balancing long-standing tradition with contemporary global appeal.

Philosophy & Vision

Cantina Tollo is deeply committed to expressing the authentic character of Abruzzo through sustainable viticulture, careful vineyard management, and continuous innovation. The winery’s vineyards extend across more than 3,000 hectares, from the coastal hills influenced by the Adriatic Sea to the slopes surrounding the Maiella mountains. The combination of Mediterranean climate, cooling sea breezes, rolling hills, and large day-to-night temperature variations creates ideal conditions for producing highly aromatic and expressive wines. The winery focuses primarily on traditional Abruzzo grape varieties such as Montepulciano and Trebbiano, preserving the region’s historic identity while continuously improving quality through research and experimentation. Many vineyards are cultivated using the traditional pergola training system, maintaining an important part of Abruzzo’s viticultural heritage.

In the cellar, Cantina Tollo combines traditional methods with modern winemaking technology. Historic facilities equipped with vitrified cement tanks, large Slavonian oak casks, and barrels are used alongside temperature-controlled fermentation systems to preserve freshness, fruit purity, and balance. In recent years, the winery has also expanded its portfolio with international varieties such as Merlot and Chardonnay, offering wines that combine traditional Italian character with a more modern and approachable style.
